Other facilities place copies in critical locations within the
residents’ rooms. It is crucial that more is understood about
how the effect of the physical location of these directives
improves or hinders communicating final wishes.
Additionally, this study does not reveal the degree to which
final wishes are actually honored even with a POLST or Five
Wishes document in place. More research is needed to better
understand the use of these documents.
Finally, future research should explore residents’
perspectives on choosing one directive over another. It would
be helpful to better understand the decision-making process

Regardless of the actual instrument used, everyone should
discuss final wishes with family members, friends and medical
personal. Having the proper documents completed and on file
in relevant locations is important, but verbally communicating
these wishes to relevant individuals should increase the
likelihood that those wishes will be honored.
