statistics, received his second award from
the American Statistical Association,
the nation's pre-eminent professional
statistical society, in as many years.
Cochran is the recipient of the 2015 Karl E.
Peace Award for his Outstanding Statistical
Contributions for the Betterment of Society.
Last year he was honored with the Founders
Award from the ASA.

statistical issues for an investigation on
domestic violence among pro MMA fighters.
The story, “Outside of the Cage,” is one
segment of the episode of Real Sports that
originally aired this past summer.
PROFESSORS SPEAK AT
TUSCALOOSA’S FIRST TEDX
Culverhouse professors Linda Parsons
and Jim Brown were two of eight speakers
selected to present at the first Tuscaloosa
TEDx Conference in April. Twenty-five
people applied to speak at the event
and eight were chosen. Parsons, an
accounting professor, presented on “How
a Neighborhood Survived a Tornado,”
and Brown, a marketing instructor, spoke
on “How to Stop Poverty.” Culverhouse
alumnus and entrepreneur Josh Sahib also
presented at the conference.
TEDx began in 1984 as a conference
where Technology, Entertainment and
Design converged, and today covers almost
all topics — from science to business to
global issues — in more than 100 languages.
The two annual TED Conferences invite the
world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak
for 18 minutes or less.
