Sherry Lang has been creating
artwork for brochures, posters,
websites, cards, publications and just
about anything you can think of that dons
the Culverhouse College of Commerce
branding, and she has been doing it for
nearly 25 years. Chances are you have
received and seen some of Lang’s work
over the years. She even, on occasion,
has taken some of the photographs that
have appeared in materials produced
for the College. Lang also spends weeks
in December and January preparing
Culverhouse’s Center for Business and
Economic Research annual reports for
the Economic Outlook Conference. The
conference yields the much-anticipated
economic outlook for the U.S. and
Alabama economies.
But this petite, unassuming senior
graphic designer packs a powerful
punch when she leaves her day job.
After hours, Lang’s passion lies in
martial arts, music and dance. In fact,
she is probably somebody you do not
want to argue with — she is a 2nd
degree black belt. This timid-looking
woman could take a large person
down with a few moves. She also
taught martial arts for years, but
her health has prevented her from
continuing that passion. Lang also has
more moves and passions than just
martial arts. She is also a dancer,
vocalist and painter, and likes to
create digital art combining all of arts.
“I am an artist and karate has
been a part of my artistic journey
along with music, dance and
painting,” Lang says.
“I’m excited about my first art show
since 2001 in May this year. My
artwork will be displayed at Canturbery
throughout May.”
One video Lang created is a tribute
to her sister, Susan, who loved to
sing but whose life was cut short in
2013. In the video, Lang recalls that
she and her sister bought a Sérgio
Mendes album and fell in love with
the song, "Davy." She says that her
sister loved to sing the song in
harmony with her, so she felt the
video would be an appropriate tribute
to her sister.
Lang also sang vocals with
some studio musicians from Muscle
Shoals, and she once sang with her
family and church choir at the
Washington National Cathedral.
So if you happen to meet or come
upon Lang in the future, be sure to not
make any sudden moves. She is petite
but packs a punch.
