NEW S FACULTY AND STAFF
MARKETING PROFESSOR RECEIVES
DISTINGUISHED FELLOW AWARD
Dr. Sharon Beatty, Phifer Fellow professor
of marketing at the Culverhouse College
of Commerce, was recently awarded the
2014 Distinguished Fellow Award by the
Society for Marketing Advances. She joins
former Culverhouse College of Commerce
Dean Barry Mason and former marketing
professor Morris Mayer as one of only 25
faculty who hold this honor. Beatty is one of
only three women to hold the honor.
Beatty was also the doctoral coordinator
at UA for more than 20 years and has
chaired more than 25 dissertations. Her
focus and current research is consumer
relationships with retailers and service
providers, impulse buying, online shopping
and family decision-making.
SMA is a premier marketing association
that brings together marketing educators
and professionals from the U.S. and
abroad. The organization promotes the
growth of intellectual leadership in the
field of marketing on the part of teachers,
researchers and students at universities.
ECONOMICS PROFESSOR RECEIVES
BURNUM DISTINGUISHED
FACULTY AWARD
Dr. Walt Enders, professor of economics,
is the 2014 recipient of the Burnum
Distinguished Faculty Award from The
University of Alabama. Enders has been
with The University of Alabama for 14 years
and currently holds the prestigious Bidgood
Chair of Economics and Finance.
Only five faculty members in the
Culverhouse College of Commerce have
won this award, and three of them are from
the department of economics, finance and
legal studies.
The Burnum Distinguished Faculty
Award is given annually to recognize
and promote excellence in research,
scholarship and teaching. The award
committee, composed of former winners
of the Burnum Award, screens nominees
and forwards its two top nominees to the
president of UA, who selects the winner.
BROOKS RECEIVES UNIVERSITY’S
HIGHEST HONOR IN TEACHING
Dr. Robert Brooks, professor of finance,
received The University of Alabama National
Alumni Association’s 2014 Outstanding
Commitment to Teaching Award, the
University’s highest honor for excellence in
teaching.
NEW FACULT Y MEMBER JAMES
COCHRAN RECEIVES ASA AWARD
The American Statistical Association
presented the association’s prestigious
Founders Award to James J. Cochran, a
new professor of applied statistics at the
Culverhouse College of Commerce.
The honor is presented annually to ASA
members who have rendered distinguished
and long-term service to the association.
ASA is the nation's pre-eminent professional
statistical society. Only 89 individuals have
received this award in ASA's 175 years of
existence.
SENIOR ASSOCIATE DEAN NAMED
SEC FELLOW
Dr. Diane E. Johnson, senior associate
dean for the Culverhouse College of
Commerce, is one of four UA faculty
members and among 49 faculty and
administrators from the Southeastern
Conference universities named a 2014–15
SEC Academic Leadership Development
Program fellow.
INSURANCE FACULTY RECEIVE HIGH
MARKS FOR PUBLISHING
Two Culverhouse professors rank high
among authors published in the top
insurance journals. Dr. Harris Schlesinger
(professor of economics and finance, and
the Frank Park Samford Chair of Insurance)
and Dr. James Ligon (professor of finance
and the Russell Professor of Business
Administration) ranked in the top 50 authors
who published in the three “elite insurance
journals” over the past 30 years.
CULVERHOUSE PROFESSOR
GIVES PRESTIGIOUS LECTURE IN
SWITZERLAND
Dr. Harris Schlesinger, professor of
finance and the Frank Park Samford Chair
of Insurance at the Culverhouse College
of Commerce, recently gave the “Geneva
Risk Lecture” at the annual meeting of
the European Group of Risk and Insurance
Economists at the University of St. Gallen in
Switzerland.
